David Drew – Principal

David has expertise in the protection of Intellectual Property (IP) in a range of fields. These fields include automotive products, high precision and automotive tooling, paints and polymers, spray nozzle technology, industrial reels, and materials handling and engineering. An experienced patent searcher, in 1999 David also qualified as an Australian Patent Attorney. He registered as a New Zealand Patent Attorney and joined a mid-tier law firm where he was made a trustee in 2001.

He has handled the IP portfolios of several major national and international companies. For example, he handled the UGG Australia and SUPACAT vs Caterpillar trade mark battles. He especially enjoys working with SME’s, working closely with owners and inventors to achieve good commercial outcomes. From April 2005 – March 2015, he managed Tatlocks Chrysiliou IP’s Melbourne Office. In November 2014, he gave notice to join Sandercock & Cowie as this firm’s new principal.

David has a broad IP practice that reflects his clients’ needs. This thriving practice involves the drafting of enforceable patent specifications and claims, trade mark protection, providing infringement, registrability and patentability opinions, and advising on designs law, enforcement and protection.

Roger Syn - Consultant

Roger Syn is an experienced patent attorney, qualified in materials engineering, and experienced in mechanical and medical devices. After graduating, he worked in the petroleum industry, joining a Patent Attorney firm in Melbourne in 1989. He then worked for a leading Singapore law firm where his experience included patent litigation. Roger thus brings to Sandercock & Cowie a global view of IP creation, management and enforcement. During his career, he has advised on extensive business operations in Asia and Europe. Roger has a sound knowledge of the patent, trade mark and design laws and requirements in Asia, Europe and the United States.

Roger’s approach to advising clients combines a broad, in-depth knowledge of intellectual property. Furthermore, he has a business person’s awareness of how patents and trade marks can be used as strategic business tools, from product development through to licencing and tactical negotiations. Roger is an excellent patent draftsman and IP strategist who consistently achieves strong results for his clients.

Roger has written law review articles in the United States and Europe. One of his articles on copyright was cited as an authority to the United States Supreme Court.
